TUF Teens Key Contributors to New Esty Street Garden

Several TUF teens stands in front of the shed they helped to build, along with members of CFCU and Chrys Gardner of Cornell Cooperative Extension at the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Esty Street Garden last Thursday.

A new community garden opened on Esty street last week on CFCU property immediately next to the Meadow Street branch. Partners include Cornell Cooperative Extension, GreenStar, Loaves and Fishes, and ICG’s own Teen Urban Farmers (TUF).

The TUF teens spent an afternoon at the Esty Street Garden and in just three hours onsite they were able to build and plant three out of the four total garden beds, and help assemble a garden shed.

Lauren Salzman, Manager of the TUF program, was very proud of the difference the TUF crew made. She says, “it was a great ‘before and after’ project for us. When we showed up, it was essentially a grassy lawn with one garden bed, and when we walked away, it was ready to be a community garden!”

The Esty Street Garden is primarily functioning as a produce source for Loaves and Fishes but will have some plots open for community shares.
