Introducing Community Grows: Houseplants

I imagine this won’t be a surprise to you, but here at ICG, we love plants. Yet some of us might be feeling that our opportunities to connect with plants outside might be more limited right now. Good news – growing houseplants is an easy way to bring the wonders of the plant kingdom into your home.

Introducing Community Grows, a project of ICG@HOME where we can grow plants together, at home.

Throughout April, we’ll be giving away more than 300 baby houseplants that were generously donated to ICG by Hortus Forum, Cornell’s undergraduate horticulture club.

This Tuesday, we dropped off 97 plants at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) to be distributed to the kids enrolled in GIAC’s after school program. See ICG Executive Director Erin Marteal (in the background), handing the bagged plants over to GIAC After School Counselor Jody Herbert. You’ll notice a safe 6′ distance between them!

Baby houseplants are now offered to ICG families. The first pickup will take place this coming Tuesday, 12-3pm in the ICG parking lot.

Reserve a plant for each child in your household using our Plant Matchmaker form. Great care will be taken to ensure a safe pickup, and detailed instructions will be emailed to folks who plan to pick up a plant. Please reserve a free baby houseplant by Monday at 10 am so we can be sure to have enough for everyone and that you get the information you need for safe pickup. A limited number of deliveries can be arranged. Limit of one houseplant per child, or one per family.

Those who pick up a plant will also be invited to participate in extension activities and Zoom sessions related to your houseplant including Ask Me Anything! sessions. We hope you will want to share your stories, photos, and questions about your houseplants.
