Fairy Dust

Fairy dust comes in handy! It’s great for making wishes or sending good luck in someone’s way.  You can sprinkle it in or near your fairy house as a gift to the fairies or on a walk to send good wishes into the world. If you’d like to add a bit of magic to your day, mix up a batch.

Materials:

  • A small container with a lid or ziploc bag
  • Birdseed or rice for your fairy dust base
  • Herbs and spices
  • Colored sand, flower petals, or colored paper

The steps:

Step 1:

The first part of making Fairy Dust is to choose a base. Birdseed makes a good base but if you don’t have any on hand, rice will do the trick.  If you don’t have rice, cornmeal or quinoa will work. Start with a generous scoop or two of your base.

Step 2:

Next up, add dried herbs and spices. These are important as they signal to the fairies that your intentions are friendly.  Choose at least one from each category if you can. Just a pinch will do.  Not so good at pinching, a ¼ or ½ teaspoon measure works too.

  • Are you a true fairy friend? Add lavender flowers or rosemary to show devotion.
  • Add black pepper or dill for protection from those who harm fairies.
  • Will you look out for the well being of fairies? Add rose petals, thyme, or cloves to show caring.
  • Will you be truthful and promise not to trick fairies? Add basil, mint, or salt to show honesty.
  • Do you believe? Add poppy seeds, cinnamon, or marjoram to show imagination.

Step 3:

Next up you need something colorful for the type of fairies you’re honoring or requesting favors from.  You can use colored sand, flower petals, even small bits of colored paper.

  • Yellow: Flower/Plant Fairies
  • Orange: Sunrise and/or Sunset Fairies
  • Green: Tree Fairies
  • Brown: Soil Fairies
  • Red: Celebration Fairies
  • Purple: Animal Fairies
  • Pink: Insect/Butterfly Fairies
  • Blue: Water Fairies
  • Black: Moonlight Fairies

Step 4:

Gently stir your ingredients together. Keep sealed in a safe spot until you are ready to use it.  Run out? Make more.  Experiment with different combinations.
